Cary holds off late run by Carolina to win - May 13, 2012

The Cary Invasion arrived in Smithfield on Saturday night on the heels of a tough overtime win the night before. The game started out sloppy and looked to be mostly a defensive struggle throughout the first quarter, with neither team mounting much of a lead. Cary led 22-20 after the first 12 minutes.

The second quarter was much of the same, but the Invasion did manage to stretch the lead to 12 points by halftime. In the third quarter, Invasion guard Freddy Little (6'1''-G-86, college: Montevallo) came alive and nearly single-handedly pushed the lead out to as many as 22 points in the third quarter. The visitors became complacent however and saw that lead dwindle to only a couple of possessions with just 5 minutes left in the game. Cary was able to hold on to win 99-89.

The rosters for both teams were short of key players. Gladiator forward and the TRBL's leading scorer Kason Cheeks (6'5''-F), Gladiator forward Travis Taylor, Invasion forward Jonathan Moore (6'8''-F/G-82, college: N.C.Central), and Invasion guard Brock Young (5'11''-G-88, college: E.Carolina) did not suit up for the game. With the win, Cary moves back to the top of the TRBL point standings.

These two teams really don't care for each other much, but that they do respect each other's game is apparent. This due, in part, to both teams carrying players on their rosters who used to play for the other team. While, too, many of them have been team...   [read more]
