NWBL - Women Basketball

A Dream come True! - Mar 10, 2006 (by Eurobasket )
I am Linnell (Jones) McKenney a former professional basketball player. I will be writing a sports column for this journal and hope you will enjoy my writings. I played in Italy for 6 years and in the USA for 1 year. I hope my writings will be interesting and informative, and will keep you interested in women's sports.
Women's basketball in America has started to become very popular. In Michigan, in the early 1970's women could not participate in competitive sports. If you wanted to play basketball, you had to play on the boy's team. In fact I myself was the first female to play on the boys basketball in Michigan. My dream as a child was to play professional basketball even if there was not a professional basketball team for women at that time. But I had to be determined to keep going. Now women's basketball has taken off like a rocket.
It is very important for the younger players, because they have opportunities now we did not have in the early 1970's. Scholarships are available to almost every college in America. The players are getting better and better, and are able to participate in a sport professionally all over the world. I would say many of the players are having fun because other opportunities are also available, such as playing in the European countries.
What has to be remembered about wanting to play professional basketball is, hard work discipline and focus is what one has to have to reach their highest potential. A lot of times young ladies think it is easy to play professionally. But it takes a lot of training, practice, and conditioning. No one can play at their highest potential without good work habits. When I see a lot of young ladies wanting to play professionally, I tell them it's going to take a lot of hard work. They usually think I'm only kidding. But to get to become a professional basketball player, you must work 10 times harder than the next person.
So if you have a dream to become a professional basketball player, just remember the opportunities are there, and you can do what ever you put your mind to. But it takes hard work, good work habits, discipline, focus and determination. Don't give up on your dream. You can make it, no matter how short, how tall, how small, you can do it, if you try hard enough. The opportunities are there, and if that's what you want to do, go for it, and dream big. Because dreams do come true.
