Bryant Voiles (6'9''-F) will get a chance to test his skills against some of the elite college basketball players in the nation this week.
The Augustana forward is one of 64 players in the country - and one of just three Division-III players in the past decade - to be selected to participate in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament.
The 60th annual pre-draft event in Portsmouth, Va., places players on eight eight-man teams and annually attracts scouts from all 30 NBA organizations as well as a number of foreign leagues.
Bryant has the ability to go there and compete well, Augustana coach Grey Giovanine said. He has such great length and such great skill and versatility. Hes somebody that the scouts are going to take a very close look at.
The 13th-year Vikings coach spares few superlatives in describing the 6-foot-9, 209-pound Voiles, calling his programs two-time most valuable player the best small-college pro prospect Ive seen since Ive been at Augustana.
Voiles led the Vikings with averages of 14.2 points and 7.2 rebounds last season and tied for the team lead in 3-point field goals in addition to leading Augustana with an 83 percent touch from the free-throw line.
The versatility that is part of Voiles game is among the reasons he was chosen to participate in the tourney, which begins Wednesday and runs through Saturday in Portsmouth, Va.
The Byron, Ill., native is among a group of invited players that includes Iowas Matt Gatens, Wisconsins Jordan Taylor, Minnesotas Ralph Sampson III, Syracuses Scoop Jardine and Truck Bryant of West Virginia.
Voiles is among two Division-III players on this years Portsmouth rosters, joining David Michaels of Whitman.
Its extremely rare for a Division-III player to be invited to participate, and were proud that he will be representing the Augustana program, Giovanine said. Its a tremendous opportunity for him, a great launching point for him as he works toward a professional career.
At Portsmouth, Voiles joins forwards Michael Glover of Iona and Kyle OQuinn of Norfolk State on the roster for Portsmouth Sports Club. The team also includes center Henry Sims of Georgetown and four guards, Devoe Joseph of Oregon, Ramone Moore of Temple, Kevin Murphy of Tennessee Tech and Erving Walker of Florida.
Six players who have competed for Giovanine-coached Augustana teams have gone on to play professionally. Four are currently playing overseas, Kyle Nelson in Latvia, Dain Swetalla in Portugal and Jay McAdams-Thornton and Bill Goehrke in Germany.
