The Virginia State University men's basketball team defeated the Bulldogs of Bowie State University, 71-64, on January 25 to secure their 10th consecutive win. Under the leadership of head coach Lonnie Blow, Jr., the Trojans hold a 16-3 overall record, 8-1 in the conference. The setback moves the Bulldogs to a 7-13 record on the season, 4-6 in the CIAA. VSU was guided by the trio of junior Richard Granberry (6'8''-F), senior Elijah Moore (6'8''-F) and sophomore Walter Williams (6'4''-G/F). Granberry controlled the game with 20 points. Moore grasped a double-double with 19 points and 18 rebound, while Williams rounded out the double digit scoring with 12 points. BSU was led by Ahmaad Wilson (6'0''-PG) with 17 points and Michael Briscoe (6'3''-G) with 6 rebounds. The first half ruled in favor of the Trojans as junior Trey Brown (6'3''-G) opened the contest with a shot from behind the arc. The Bulldogs attempted to close the scoring gap, coming within 2 points of a tie, but VSU would quickly answer back. Moore gave the team the momentum to pull away with a double digit lead after a 3-pointer with 4:24 left in the half. VSU was able to hold on to the lead despite BSU visiting the line to secure additional points. The Trojans entered the locker room at halftime, leading 34-26. The second half mimicked the first, as the Trojans fought to maintain their lead. On several plays, the Bulldogs came extremely close to tying the game, but VSU stayed calm and played the game.. Williams guided the Trojans as the clock ticked away, recording all 12 of his points in the second half. Keeping the home team at a distance, the Trojans sealed the 71-64 win. Although both teams were equally matched in bench points (12-all), the Trojans dominated the Bulldogs in all the other areas. VSU maintained control with points off turnovers (19-14,) points in the paint (32-20), second chance points (13-4) and fast break points (4-2). VSU ended the matchup shooting 37.7 percent (20-53) from the field, 30.8 percent (4-13) from behind the arc, and 67.5 percent (27-40) at the line, while BSU ended the game shooting 33.9 percent (20-59) from the field, 23.5 percent (4-17) from behind the arc, and 71.4 percent (20-28) at the line. The Trojans will take on the Lions of Lincoln University on January 28. Tip-off is set for 4pm at the VSU Multipurpose Center. VSU will continue to work hard to prepare for the 2017 CIAA Basketball Tournament on February 20-25 in Charlotte. NC.
