It wasn't easy. Flagler College's men's basketball team had to fend off a late Clayton State rally, but the Saints held on to beat the Lakers 83-80 Monday, ending a 17-game road losing streak that stretched back to the 2014-15 season. After Clayton State took an 80-79 lead with 33 seconds left, Flagler's Vaughn McCall (6'3''-G) buried a 3-pointer with 13 seconds remaining and the Lakers missed their final two shots. Flagler's last road win had been on Feb. 4, 2015 - 64-59 at Armstrong State. 'Vaughn hit a huge 3 for us and we got a stop at the end,' Flagler College coach Bo Clark said. 'It was a great road win for us. We really needed to believe we can win on the road and we did. I was very positive with our guys and I thought we showed great resolve and toughness.' The win also snapped a six game losing streak as the Saints improved to 7-7, 2-6 in the Peach Belt Conference. The Saints shot 51 percent from the field in the first half (17 of 33) to take a 52-35 halftime lead. They hit 11 of 13 free throws in the first half. But the Lakers went on a 10-2 run to whittle the deficit to eight (67-59) midway through the second half and then went on an 18-7 spurt to take the lead for the first time since early in the game when they were up 3-2. Dantez Bennamon (5'11''-PG-96) hit two free throws to put the home team on top 80-79. After McCall, who led the Saints with 21 points, hit his fifth 3-pointer, Bennamon missed a jumper. Ben Bobbitt hit a free throw with two seconds left for Flagler, and Kyle Kinsey's shot at the buzzer was no good for the Lakers. Cortlin Davis (6'5''-F), who had missed two games with a sprained ankle, added 15 points and three blocked shots for the Saints. Chris Walker scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds, Jeffercy Jean had 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Alfonso Davis (6'8''-F-94) led Clayton State with 21 points and 12 rebounds, including six offensive boards. Christoff Nairn recorded 16 points. 'Hopefully this gives us a much needed shot of confidence,' Clark said. 'We really shot the ball with a ton of confidence in the first half. Alfonso Davis is one of the best bigs in NCAA (Division) II, and we tried to contain him as much as possible.' The Lakers are coached by Jimmy Link, a former Flagler College player and assistant coach under Clark. The Saints didn't have much time to celebrate. They were soon back on the bus heading to Augusta, Georgia, where they will take on Augusta University (13-3, 6-2) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
