FGCU wins ASU Championship title; moves on to NCAA Tournament - Mar 13, 2017
FGCU came from behind to claim the 2017 ASUN Women's Basketball Championship with a 77-70 win at Stetson. The Eagles head back to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in the last six years. China Dow (5'8''-G-95) was named the Tournament MVP following a career day in Sunday's final. Dow scored 31 points and added 10 rebounds to power the Eagles past Stetson. FGCU trailed for most of the contest, but the Eagles outscored Stetson 26-16 in the final period to secure the victory and a trip back to the Big Dance. Jordin Alexander (5'11''-G) joined Dow on the All-Tournament team after nearly producing a triple-double today with 14 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. The Hatters got off to the better start as ASUN Player of the Year, Brianti Saunders (5'4''-G-94), was on fire right from the opening tip. She scored 16 of her 23 points in the first half, including 13 in the first quarter as she was 5-for-5 to start the game. FGCU trailed and needed a spark to stay in the contest, and that's where Dow entered the contest and made an instant impact. She scored seven points in the first quarter as the Eagles tied it up 20-20 after 10 minutes. The second quarter followed a similar pattern as the Hatters were on fire from behind the arc. Brittney Chambers (5'6''-G), who joined Saunders as All-Tournament selections, connected on three triples in the first half to push the Stetson lead to five. Overall, Stetson was 8-for-10 in the first half shooting from behind the arc. FGCU continued to go in the paint and found success as they scored 22 of 34 first half points inside. Stetson took a 38-34 lead into the locker room at halftime. Stetson's hot outside shooting carried over into the second half as Saunders and Chambers continued to make threes to keep the Hatters in front. Chambers and McKenna Beach (5'6''-G-96) combined to give the Hatters a 51-45 lead with 2:13 to go in the third quarter, but Dow answered once again with six points in the final two minutes of the quarter to give the Eagles some momentum heading into the fourth. FGCU trailed 54-51 entering the final 10 minutes of the game. Breana Bey (5'9''-F-95) hit a couple of jumpers to open the period as Stetson extended its lead to nine at the 6:35 mark of the fourth quarter. FGCU responded to the adversity with an 11-0 run, capped by Dow's deep three-pointer form the top of the key to give the Eagles their first lead of the second half at 64-62. The game teetered in the balance for the next several minutes as both sides traded buckets. FGCU took the lead for good with 2:27 to go, when Rosemarie Julien (5'11''-F) knocked down a pair of foul shots, followed by Dow's fourth triple of the game to give her 29 points. Dow added another layup with a minute to go to finish with a career-high 31 points.
