Dean Murray
Just 10 games into their inaugural season, the Cape Breton Highlanders are on their second head coach. After firing former head coach Dean Murray on Sunday, the Highlanders Monday announced the promotion of Ben Resner from the team's assistant coaching position. Resner spent two years on the coaching staff of the Canton Charge, the NBA development league affiliate for the Cleveland Cavaliers. During his time with the Charge, the Centerport, N.Y. native worked with NBA stars Lebron James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love. 'We've gotten to know Ben well this past number of weeks and we have confidence that he can continue to build on our program,' said team general manager and president Tyrone Levingston in a news release. Things haven't been easy for the Highlanders this year. The team is 2-8 and owns the worst record in the NBL Canada through the first quarter of the season. The Highlanders also have the league's second-worst offence. 'I'm very thankful to coach Murray for being a mentor to me and a great friend. I am thankful that Tyrone has given me the opportunity to lead this team,' said Resner in a news release. 'We are excited to get to work, continuing to build a team that the community can be proud of.' The Highlanders also announced that power forward Keith Thomas has returned home to New York state to attend to personal matters and is expected to return to the lineup in the coming weeks. Thomas averaged 9.4 points-per-game in during the Highlanders' opening 10 games. The Highlanders' next game is in P.E.I. on Jan. 26. In other NBL Canada news, Halifax Hurricanes guard Tu'Quan Zimmerman is the Atlantic Division player of the week. Zimmerman averaged 18.5 points in two Halifax wins this past week, including a 112-108 overtime win over Cape Breton Saturday night. Halifax will look to remain unbeaten on Thursday night when the Saint John Riptide come to town.
