Denzel
Mensah
Denzel Mensah (6'3''-G-93, college: Penn St-Wilkes Barre) completely dominated the Greensboro Pro Day and was clearly the best player on the court that night. His toughness, intensity, and all-out effort at both ends throughout the entire scrimmage set him apart from the others, and the memory of Denzel repeatedly finishing layups at the rim was the biggest takeaway from that night of basketball.
Mensah is seemingly right in the middle of every play on both ends of the floor. He's in incredible physical condition, a trait which gives him a huge advantage in several different ways. He regularly beats opponents as well as teammates down the floor and to loose balls, resulting in many extra possessions and uncontested layups for his team. Mensah's hustle demoralizes opponents over the course of a game, and with his work ethic I know he can compete at the G-league level.
Mensah is a high IQ player who knows his game and plays to his strengths. He's a solid ball-handler, but most importantly he doesn't waste dribbles and does everything with a purpose. He makes great use of the pump fake, and after getting his defender out of position he usually goes straight to the rim. He has a very quick first step, and once he gets to the rim he's extremely good at finishing with power around the basket. He's also capable of finding the open man when the defense collapses on him.
Defensively Mensah is a beast. He has an exceptionally aggressive and physical mindset in every aspect of the game, and defensively this manifests into lots of steals and forced missed shots and turnovers from his opponents. Denzel is a shutdown defender who could always take the assignment of guarding the opposing team's best guard, while at the same time still bringing a high energy level on the offensive end.
While Mensah did show the ability to knock down the three. At his size he'll have to consistently knock down open shots to stay on the floor at the G-league level, but I expect him to keep working and be able to keep defenses honest. I'd like to see him work on his mid-range game as well, but his intangibles and competitive toughness make up for any deficiencies he might have. Mensah plays winning basketball, and his toughness and effort will rub off on his teammates in any league he plays in.
