The Bethel Wildcats withstood a furious second half rally by Coastal Georgia Thursday night in Brunswick, Georgia and beat the Mariners 96-92. Bethel led at halftime 52-35 but saw the Mariners cut the lead to just two at 87-85 with 1:10 left. A basket by Marcus Burnett (6'8''-C) and two free throws by Andrew Rogan gave Bethel a 91-85 lead. Bethel's Bryant Wilkinson (6'3''-G) then nailed five of six free throws attempts and Bethel was able to hold on. The Wildcats improved to 16-7 overall and 7-6 in the SSAC. Coastal is 3-19 and 0-13. Bethel won their third straight while the Mariners lost their 12th straight. Bethel holds a 6-1 advantage in the series. The Wildcats shot 54 percent hitting 37-of -68 attempts from the floor. They hit eight threes and were 14-of-20 free throws. The Mariners hot 52 percent from the field going 33-of-63 from the floor. The Mariners hit 11 three's but hit just 15- of-25 free throw tries. Bethel out rebounded CG 37-36 and had a 54-36 advantage in points in the paint. Isaac Edmondson (6'5''-F) led Bethel with a career high 26 points. He also grabbed a game high eight rebounds and dished out three assists. Rogan finished with 17 points. Burnett had 10 points while Justice Scott continued his good play with 13 points. Brandon Martin (6'4''-F) led the Mariners with 27 points. Coach Jeff Britt said his team didn't finish the way he wished but was happy with the win. "We didn't close as I had wished but hopefully we can learn from this and take that into our next game. We still have a lot of improvement that needs to take place." The Cats continue their southeast road trip Saturday meeting Brewton-Parker in Mount Vernon, Georgia at 3 p.m. CST.

NAIA tourney format up for debate - 1 month ago
A major shift in NAIA basketball is now official. On Monday, the NAIA approved the move to one division in both men's and women's basketball, effective for the 2020-21 academic year. This decision was voted on by the Council of Presidents (COP) at the NAIA Convention in Kansas City, Missouri. The merger calls for each program to offer eight scholarships.
