FORT WORTH, TX: Texas Wesleyan University Head Men's Basketball Coach Brennen Shingleton announced this week the addition of Matt Garnett to his coaching staff. Garnett will serve as Associate Head Coach in the upcoming 2016-17 season.
"Obviously our program and players are just thrilled to have Matt join our team," Shingleton said. "He has been a great friend to me in the past, and with all of his experience and success on and off the court, he will be a tremendous addition to our program. He is a great example of what is right about college basketball, and I can't begin to explain how excited I am to have him join our coaching staff. We will all benefit from Matt's knowledge and experience."
In five seasons as a collegiate head coach, Garnett owns a record of 96-59 (.619). Most recently he served as head coach at Wayland Baptist University, a fellow Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) institution. There he took over a program that had won just nine games in its previous season. In four years, he led the Pioneers to an SAC Championship and two appearances in the NAIA National Tournament. In 2015, his team won the SAC Tournament and he was named SAC Coach of the Year.
"I have witnessed firsthand how much Brennen cares for his players and how he runs his program, and I'm excited to be a part of it," Garnett commented. "I appreciate the opportunity and look forward to continuing to build on the success that the men's basketball program has seen here in recent years."
Garnett also owns and operates MGBasketball Instruction which runs camps and clinics throughout the year.
He graduated magna cum laude from Wayland Baptist University in 2005 and earned his master's in Christian Ministry one year later.
An All-State guard at Glen Rose High School, Garnett played three seasons at Wayland Baptist. He started 86 of 89 games during that stretch and led the Pioneers to three consecutive NAIA National Tournament appearances with an overall record of 65-32. He was named both Honorable Mention All-American and NAIA Scholar-Athlete as a junior in 2004.
He went on to play his senior season at Biola University where he was coached by NAIA Hall of Famer Dave Holmquist. The Eagles advanced to the Elite 8 at the 2005 NAIA National Tournament, and Garnett once again received NAIA Scholar-Athlete recognition.
Garnett currently resides in Willow Park, TX, with his wife Anna and three daughters Faith (8), Grace (6), and Hope (3).
