The CBDL announces that the Tampa Bay Windjammers are to be added for the 2016 season. This will be great addition to the CBDL as it will bring the team total to 4 in the Florida region and a total of 10 teams. "We are happy to announce the strong hold of another very solid franchise in the Wind Jammers and extremely excited to bring them in for a strong 2016 season" said CEO Benjamin Mireles. Here is the statment from the new Chief Executive Officer Mr. Warren Davis:
"I had considered establishing a stable and professional basketball presence in the Tampa bay area before moving here. So after relocating in August of 2001 my obstacle was negotiating with the right league & have the finances at the same time. I was able to field a semi-pro football team from the ground up much faster due to the popularity of the sport here putting minor-league hoops on the back burner but sealing my competitive juices in the process. along the way, I communicated with Ed Krinsky (former
USBL Commissioner) who did the noble deed of trying to save me money by putting me in touch with someone possessing Dormant franchises and I found an eventual friend & mentor by reaching out to Richard T. Avis, attorney at law. Now-a-days I refer to him as "my boy rick" but back then I was fascinated with the amount of time & experience this busy lawyer shared with a total stranger (me). as a disabled man coping with depression I was struggling with fights over visitation & moving forward after my divorce and the kindness & grace that Rick showed me, gave me hope for my own success. Id like to think our rap sessions talking shop were therapeutic for him in return but the truth is he had already gotten over his failure with pro basketball in this area and was working to help his friend & mentor acquire a CFL team. I never did
buy a franchise from him as the USBL folded but Rick gave me the team name he used (Tampa Bay Wind Jammers) along with an original jersey as a souvenir. Rick has since moved to Seattle but remains a resource for me and has expressed an interest in bringing basketball back to the emerald city in addition to his Canadian Football League aspirations...I felt a similar friend/mentor connection with Commissioner/Head Coach Ben Mireles which gives me enthusiasm in joining the
CBDL."
