MINNEAPOLIS - The Cedar Valley CourtKings knocked off the top-seeded Minnesota Rangers, 108-98, to claim the inaugural Midwest Basketball League championship Sunday at the Minneapolis Sports Center.

Anthony James (6'0''-PG-89, college: N.Iowa) scored 30 points and dished out five assists, while five other players scored in double figures - Aundre Hicks (6'2''-G-88) (17), Lamar Wall (6'0''-PG-90, college: Mt.Mercy) (16), Alex Coleman (6'5''-F-90, college: Mt.Mercy) (14), Gage Heffernan (6'4''-G-92, college: Dubuque) (12) and Marvin Singleton (6'6''-F-93, college: N.Iowa) (10).

The CourtKings had lost twice previously to the Rangers during the regular season by three points each time.

'This group was bound and determined to win the championship,' CourtKings owner Gary Rima said. 'We had to beat the No. 1 seed (Dayton) Saturday night and the No. 1 seed from the MBL West) to do it. I'm so happy for these guys.'

'If you look at it, it is the exact same group that started on April 1. We had no turnover. We stayed together, stayed dedicated through the whole season and coach Stan Hughes did a tremendous job with the guys.'

Cedar Valley trailed after one quarter, 17-16, but a huge second quarter where the CourtKings scored built a 11-point halftime leader, 46-35, a lead it never relinquished en route to the championship.

Singleton had 13 boards for a double-double, and Heffernan added nine boards. Wall had three steals.

'We played great team defense. The guys really stepped up against two teams this weekend that tried to go out and score 125, 130 points a game. Our defense really lead us,' Rima added. 'Everybody stepped up, really ... Alex Coleman, Clay Cook, Gage Heffernan ... across the board.'

James and Singleton will represent the CourtKings Saturday in the MBL all-star game in Lincoln, Ill.

Fury use balanced attack to rout Rangers in Chicago - 8 days ago
The Minnesota Rangers headed into Chicago on Saturday to do battle against a well balanced Fury team who has been staggering teams with its defense as of late. Both of these teams have been playing some good basketball but the only team Chicago wanted to be talked about was them as they jumped all over Minnesota early leading 37-16 to end the first period. Despite the Rangers slow start big Dominique Dawson (6'8''-C/F-91, college: Ky Wesleyan) and Latrell Love (6'5''-PF-93, college: Miss....   [read more]

Records Are Made To Be Broken - 18 days ago
Joe Thomasson(6'4''-G-93, college:Wright St.)Thomasson (#1 M.V.P. Candidate) made it a point to get everyone involved. Thomasson who is averaging 30.2 pts. per game (3rd in the league). Had a stellar all around performance against the Indiana Dream. Mr Do it All on top of scoring 27 pts. added 15 rebs. and set up his teammates time and time again dishing out 19 ast. to break the all time league record previously (16) set by Chris McHenry in the first season of the league in 2016.. Thomasson and McGee put on a show in Ohio - 19 days ago
The Kentucky Flash rolled into Dayton on Saturday night with one thing on their mind and that was to give the Airstrikers another loss at home like they did earlier in the season. But however Mr Joe Thomasson (6'4''-G-93, college: Wright St.) was not trying to have that as he put on a typical Joe type performance by setting the pace for his team as they went up by 14 leaving the Flash a little puzzled. Just as the Airstrikers were starting to cruise Patrick McGee(6'4''-G-87) (Flash) had d...   [read more]
