A scholarship to NCAA Division I Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (2008-10) playing under head coach Perry Clark was the next stop for Coombs, helping the Islanders to a 35-30 record over two seasons.

His pro career started in Texas, playing with the Dallas Impact of the ABA. Coombs spent the 2013-14 season in Kosovo, averaging over 22 ppg to lead KB Drita Gjilan to a fifth place finish in the SuperLeague before returning home to Toronto.
