Lathan hit 17-of-26 from the field. He had 21 in the first half, which ended with the Lightning trailing 51-50. L.A. outscored the visitors 28-19 in the third quarter. Chris Ayer (6'10''-C-83, college: Loyola Mary) had 18 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks in the ninth straight home win by the Lightning (2-0). Battle Creek (2-9) had five players in double figures, led by Jared Axon's 24. Odgra Bobo (6'6''-F-85, college: Oakland CC) and Joe Young (6'0''-G, college: Canisius) added 19 pts apiece, Courtney Smith (6'5''-F/C) had 14 points and 14 boards. Kamran Sufi (5'9''-G, college: St.Mary's, CA) had 12 assists for L.A., which won despite making just 2-18 from the 3-point arc. The Lightning won the rebound battle 58-47 and outscored the visitors 64-38 in the paint. Los Angeles will host the Gary Splash in another three-game series at three local high schools. The first one is Friday at 7 p.m. at Calabasas High.

After trailing by six late in the third quarter, the Lightning went on a 19-6 run to take a 96-87 lead with 7:43 to play. Minutes later, they enjoyed their biggest lead at 112-98 after a 3-pointer by Ayer and a jumper by Billy Knight (6'5''-G, college: UCLA). Ayer hit 13 of 19 shots and finished with 29 points and 11 rebounds. The 6-11 forward was a perfect 3-3 on 3-pointers. Ayer, Trayvon Lathan (6'7''-G-84, college: Chowan) and Knight -- all Lightning veterans -- combined for 80 points and 32 rebounds. The Lightning won the board battle 61-48 and collected 27 assists en route to their eighth straight home victory. Kamran Sufi (5'9''-G, college: St.Mary's, CA) handed out 13 assists but also had nine turnovers. Lathan scored 21 of his 27 points in the first half, which ended with the Knights (2-8) ahead 54-51. Lathan also had 14 rebounds. Knight added 24 points, seven boards and five assists. The Lightning outrebounded the visitors from Michigan 61-48 and outshot them in the second half 52 to 41.2 percent. Manny Richardson (6'7''-F-88, college: Central Mo.) had 20 points and nine boards for the Knights and Marcus Lancaster (5'10''-G-86, college: Montevallo) scored 20 in 25 minutes but was hampered by an ankle injury in the second half. The same teams will meet tonight, Sunday 12, in a 6 p.m. game at Cal Lutheran.
