A sellout crowd at Alverno College in Milwaukee, Wis. witnessed the Flint Monarchs repeat as champions of the Global Women's Basketball Association (GWBA) over the weekend.
On Saturday, the Monarchs defeated the Milwaukee Aces, 83-68, to claim the national title on the road.
"This team was very special because any player on this roster could be a leading scorer for the game," said Monarchs coach Nicole Randolph. "With fire power like that it is sure to create many matchup problems, at any moment during the game.
"I'm very blessed and humbled with the opportunity to coach these fine women."
League owner Sonya Nichols awarded Monarchs star Crystal Bradford (6'0''-G/F-93, college: Cent.Michigan, agency: LBM Management) as the Finals MVP after going off for a game-high of 23 points with 13 rebounds, five assists and four steals while going 4-for-8 from the 3-point line.
Bradford made history in 2015 as the first Central Michigan player to be drafted as the seventh overall pick by the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA.
"Crystal Bradford started the game strong, finished the game stronger and proved exactly why talent wins games," said Drey Wynn, Monarchs President and General Manager. "It takes a lot to impress me, but I cracked a smile while watching Crystal play because I realized at that moment we had the best player on the court and there was nothing Milwaukee could do about it."
The Monarchs took a commanding 47-31 lead at halftime with Flint Northwestern product Sparkle Taylor scoring three consecutive baskets during a decisive first quarter run that set the tone for the rest of the game. Taylor would end with 10 points.
Flint guard Jasmine McCall also added 14 points and four assists and Shareta Brown posted 10 points and 10 rebounds.
"Outside of the expected consistency of Brandie Baker and scoring prowess of Arlesia Morse, I was pleasantly surprised with the play of true rookie and Flint Native Sparkle Taylor," Wynn said. "She clearly is our future and her overseas play during the upcoming fall/winter months will elevate her game even higher for next season."
