After two successful seasons the East Coast Basketball League is growing. Since the PrimeTime Players clinched their second-straight championship in late June, the minor league based in the Carolinas has added three franchises for 2017 (Charlotte Golden Bulls, Lumberton Showstoppers, Florence Wildcats). Today the league announced their fourth new team - the Carolina Thunder.

Based in Dillon, South Carolina, the Thunder are not new to the area basketball circuit. Formed in 2015 the Thunder have competed in cash prize tournaments as well as exhibitions against other minor league teams.

Carolina Thunder are owned by Sebastian Page and Anthony Murray, no strangers to the Pee Dee area. You can expect to see local talent on their roster come spring 2017.

'Carolina Thunder are going to bring some exciting players to ECBL,' said Page. 'Andrew Crawford (6'4''-G) will be one of the many players to watch as this will be his first stint on the Thunder traveling team. He brings tons of talent to the table!'

Former Mullins HS standout Crawford is just one season removed from his collegiate days at Benedict College in nearby Columbia. The 6'4 guard averaged 12.2 points, 4.8 rebounds while shooting 40.7% from beyond the three-point arc his senior season with the NCAA Division II Tigers.

Page continued, 'I always wanted to bring something big to the area and now I get a chance for the city thanks to the ECBL.'

A year after the inaugural season of the Florence Wildcats' semi-professional basketball team, the organization is looking to bring something brand new to the Pee Dee community. Next spring, the Wildcats not only will have a men's basketball program, but they also will have a women's semi-professional team. 'There's just a huge demand for it,' said Isaac Wilson the Wildcats' director of business operations. 'There's never been one in the Pee Dee area.
