A home and home series over the weekend resulted in two wins for the Horizon but not before some heart pounding moments.
The "Big Green Machine" had all they could handle from a much improved and spunky Schuylkill Firedogs team.
The Saturday night affair on Schuylkill's court started out relatively calm with the Horizon going up 64-46 at half. But the Firedogs came out of the locker room with all jets firing and outscored the Horizon 47-27 in the third quarter to take the lead at 93-91.
From that point on it was Charlie Parker time. His determination, grit and talent kicked in and he literally carried the team on his back to a 125-115 victory. Parker ended the night with 29 points, 15 rebounds. 17 assists, 7 steals and 2 blocks. The only thing he didn't do was sell hot dogs at halftime. This performance has to rank as one of his all-time EBA best.
As good as Parker was, it took a total team effort to secure victory. Hockaday and Vance each had 23 points. Demond's total included four crucial 3-pointers. Josiah Peay had 19 points and 12 rebounds, Cory Boone 12 and Allen Richardson 10 to round out the double scorers.
The Firedogs kept it close with big scoring efforts from Shannon Givens with 39 points that included five 3's. Cory Houser's 33 round-out the Firedogs' big scorers.
The teams went back at each other Sunday afternoon on the Horizon's home court. Both teams showed some flatness from the night before but the game soon heated up and turned into a real nail biter for both sides.
The Horizon were down by two at half 50-48 and the Dogs increased it to 8 mid-way through the third. Kevin Onyeaka injected some energy into the Horizon line-up with three monster dunks and the home team gradually climbed back into the lead.
However, the outcome of the game went right down to the wire. The Firedogs missed two free throws and a jumper with seconds remaining allowing the Horizon to hang on to a 101-99 victory and keep their winning streak alive at 16.
Parker recorded his sixth triple-double of the season with 20 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks. Demond Vance (19), Kevin Onyeaka (14), and Cody Boone (10) also put double figures in the book.y
Shannon Givens (26), Will Barrett (20) and Cory Houser (19) were high-scorers for the Firedogs.
