Wizards_FeatureWith a thrilling 118-116 win over the Harrisburg Horizon, the New York Wizards remained undefeated in EBA play for the 2013 season and win the Eastern Basketball Alliance Championship.

I am amazed that a team can travel like that, get out of their car, and put on a show like the Horizon put on, stated Wizards Head Coach Greg Cerillo

I was immediately concerned and knew we were in for a long day in the first quarter of this game, when we gave up 30 points in the quarter. We hold teams to right around 100, thats our thing. (Prior to this game the Wizards gave up an average of 94 PPG. Even in the lone blemish to their season, a loss to a non-league opponent the ABA New Jersey Express, the Wizards gave up 105 points). We were going to have to find another way to win, and we did just that, continued Cerillo.

The Horizon utilized devastating shooting from both Dominique Asbury (26-points ) and Trey Sharpe 26 points (including 4 3-point shots in the fourth quarter) to give the Wizards fits all night long!

The Wizards however, managed to come up with the answers, and it started with 2-time EBA MVP Aubin Scott who finished the game with 29-points after scoring 27 against Westchester the night before. To prove what a money player Aubin is, he scored 13 points in the 4th quarter alone when the game was up for grabs! Wizards' 69 center Ant Cox outplayed every big man thrown at him scoring 25 points and grabbing 13 boards!

Aubin Scott and Ant Cox are two of the best players in minor league basketball period, stated Wizards Head Coach Greg Cerillo I am sure both will draw serious consideration for MVP honors, and truly both should be signed to play overseas immediately.

Cerillo continued, Cox is a big who can shoot from the outside or score inside on anyone. And Aubin just cant be stopped by any one guard, and is the ultimate, team player. I remember one team last season saying that they held Aubin to 33.

What makes the Wizards so unique though is their depth. Unlike many minor league clubs who can bring 3-5 players to the floor, the Wizards are 12 deep. Adding to the Wizards Championship run on Sunday was 2012 Rebounding Champion, 66 Brandon Lawley who finished the game with 17 points and 12 rebounds, former Arkansas guard Eric Ferguson who finished with 19 points, former Iona guard Trinity Fields added 15 points, while former Florida Atlantic star Shavar Richardson contributed 8, shooting 4-4 from the free throw line. Perhaps just as important though may have been the contributions of 67 Tevon McNair, who although hobbled with an ankle injury, provided depth at the bigs when added with 68 Chris Abney who finished with 2-points, 5-rebounds, and 2-blocks.

Look at the play and the quality of play in the EBA. Its outstanding, continued Cerllo. We set out this year to prove the quality of our league, and this final game for the championship may have done just that! I have carefully watched the Web-sites all season long to judge the quality of play in our geographic area."

Playing more games (if played poorly with poor competition) and having more teams is not always the recipe for success. I think minor league ball will have to continue to improve if we are going to establish credibility to get our players signed for better opportunities. I know league presidents and owners cringe with regular season wins by almost 60-points, and teams making the playoffs and giving up 170+ points. I know all our leagues and league presidents have discussed these issues openly and I look forward to the changes they will make next season. I truly hope we can see leagues come together for an overall championship or tournament to showcase the best of all our teams and players.
