BayHawks invite Erie's Blanks as practice player - Nov 10, 2012

The Erie BayHawks have invited Erie native Julian Blanks (6'2''-G-80, college: La Salle) to their training camp as a practice player, first-year BayHawks coach Gene Cross said this morning. The BayHawks begin training camp Saturday. "I'm just thankful Coach Cross is giving me an extra look to prove that I can play on this level," Blanks said. "I'm looking forward to starting a new challenge in my hoop career." An Cathedral Prep graduate, Blanks, 32, participated in Erie's open tryout last month at Family First Sports Complex. The 6-foot 2-inch, 195-pound point guard starred at LaSalle in college and played overseas for several years. Blanks was diagnosed with cancer in 2009 but has since been deemed cancer free. "At the worst, he comes in and he's a competitive player," Cross said. "At the best, he demonstrates he's able to play at this level and he gets signed to a contract if we acquire him." Blanks is the only practice player invited to camp, Cross said. "There were other players we could have brought in," Cross said. "I felt that one, he probably deserved another opportunity aside from the open tryout to come in and get a shot." The BayHawks have an D-League maximum 17 players on their training camp roster. "We get a chance to see him close and personal compete against some good players," Cross said about Blanks. Cross said the D-League has changed its rules since last season to allow practice players during training camp. Last season, Jay Larranaga tried to bring in 7-footer Jeff Foote (7'0''-C-88, college: Cornell) to camp, but the D-League informed him he couldn't have practice players in camp. Larranaga knew Foote from when he as an assistant at Cornell where Foote finished his college career in 2009-10. Cross said teams now can have an unlimited amount of practice players in camp. D-League teams also can have practice players during the season. Practice players do not have to sign D-League contracts. If they are added to the 10-man roster, they must sign a D-League contract.

The Erie BayHawks (1-6) fell to the Maine Red Claws (6-2) 101-91 tonight at Erie Insurance Arena after returning home from a five-game road trip. After a back and forth first quarter that saw eight lead changes, the Red Claws jumped out to a 56-64 lead at half behind a 17-4 run in the second quarter. Erie fell behind by as many as 13 in the second half but closed the gap to six when Stephen Zimmerman hit a floater with 2:31 to play. Maine answered with six straight points including a dunk...   [read more]

Santa Cruz no match for sharpshooting Long Island - 9 hours ago

Long Island Nets forward Trahson Burrell (6'7''-F/G, college: Memphis, agency: Stealth Sport) knocked down a 3-pointer from the wing early on against the Santa Cruz Warriors. Thirty seconds later, center Chris McCullough (6'10''-F-95, college: Syracuse) drained a triple from the corner. It was a microcosm of things to come. And the Warriors had no answer. The Nets quickly jumped out to a double-digit lead via the 3-pointer and never looked back, earning their first home win at Brooklyn's...   [read more]

Los Angeles D-Fenders agreed terms with 29-year old forward Jeff Ayres (206-109kg-87, college: Arizona State). It is actually his comeback to D-Fenders as he has played here before. Ayres already started the season at CSKA Moscow in Russian VTB league, but left the team in Nov.'16. In four EuroLeague games he had 6.0ppg and 4.8rpg this season.
