Traditionally, every week we bring you a list of the top performances of Canadians who are currently playing abroad.

   #1. This week's number one is an international center Khem Birch (208-92, college: UNLV, currently plays in Euroleague). He led his Greek team Olympiacos to a victory over the ninth-ranked Darussafaka (12-13) 81-73 in the Euroleague in Friday night's game. Birch was MVP of the game. He recorded 13 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks in a mere 18 minutes on the court. Olympiacos S.F.P. Pireus (18-7) is placed third in the Euroleague. This year Birch averages: 8.1ppg, 6.6rpg, 2FGP: 65.0%(78-120) and FT: 62.7% in 25 games he played so far. He is currently a member of the Canadian senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to an international forward Anthony Bennett (203-93, college: UNLV, currently plays in Euroleague). Bennett could not help Fenerbahce (16-9) to beat Baskonia (14-11). He recorded 9 points. But Fenerbahce was defeated 79-74 at home by the lower-ranked Baskonia (#7). Bennett's overall stats this season are: 2.4ppg, 1.2rpg, 3FGP: 25.0%. He is in the roster of the Canadian senior national team.

   #3. The Canadian player who performed third best last week abroad was former international guard Andrew Wiggins (203-95, college: Kansas, currently plays in NBA). Wiggins was the main contributor in a 1-point Minnesota Timberwolves' victory against the Golden State Warriors (52-14) 103-102 in the NBA on Friday night. He was the best player in that game. Wiggins scored 24 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 37 minutes; quite an impressive performance considering it's only his third season in pro basketball. The Minnesota Timberwolves have 28-38 record this season. Wiggins has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 22.9ppg, 4.1rpg, 2.4apg, 2FGP: 47.7%, 3FGP: 34.8% and FT: 76.4% in 66 games. Wiggins played for the Canadian national team two years ago.

   #4. Forward Melvin Ejim (200-91, college: Iowa St., currently plays in Basketball Champions League) was the major contributor in an Umana Venezia's victory against the closely-ranked Scandone AV (10-4) 72-68 in the Basketball Champions League in Wednesday night's game. He scored 10 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Umana Reyer Venezia (9-5) is placed third in group B. It's Ejim's first season with the team. Ejim has relatively good stats this year: 10.9ppg, 5.8rpg, 1.4apg and 1.3spg. He has a dual citizenship: Canadian and Nigerian. Ejim is also Canadian national team player.

Former international swingman Jamal Murray (198-97, college: Kentucky, currently plays in NBA) contributed to an easy victory against the Los Angeles Lakers (20-47) crushing them 129-101 in the NBA last Monday. He was the top player that evening. Murray scored 22 points and added 3 passes in 30 minutes; not bad, considering it's only his third season in pro basketball. The Denver Nuggets have 32-35 record this season. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. This year Murray has relatively solid stats: 9.3ppg, 2.5rpg and 1.9apg in 67 games. He used to play for the Canadian national team two years ago.

   #6. Power forward Kelly Olynyk (213-91, college: Gonzaga, currently plays in NBA) contributed to a Boston Celtics' victory against the Golden State Warriors (52-14) 99-86 in the NBA on Wednesday night. Olynyk recorded 17 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals. The Boston Celtics have a solid 42-25 record this season. Olynyk is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fourth year in Celtics' roster. He has reliable stats this season: 8.9ppg, 4.8rpg and 2.0apg. Olynyk is a former international player as he played for the Canadian senior team two years ago.

Former international forward Aaron Doornekamp (201-85, agency: Interperformances, currently plays in Spain) helped CB Canarias win their game against the closely-ranked Movil Estudiantes (17-5) 82-63 in the Spanish Liga Endesa in Sunday night's game. He scored 8 points in 16 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Iberostar Tenerife CB Canarias (18-5) is placed first in the Liga Endesa. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Doornekamp's stats this year are: 12.3ppg, 4.0rpg and 1.2apg in 23 games. He used to play for the Canadian national team two years ago.

   #8. Forward Tristan Thompson (206-91, college: Texas, currently plays in NBA) helped Cleveland Cavaliers win their game against the Orlando Magic (24-44) 116-104 in the NBA last Saturday. Thompson recorded a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting 13 rebounds. He also added 2 blocks. The Cleveland Cavaliers have a solid 43-22 record this season. Thompson has been at the team for six years. Thompson averaged so far 8.1ppg, 9.7rpg and 1.2bpg. He plays currently for the Canadian national team.

   #9. International point guard Cory Joseph (190-91, college: Texas, currently plays in NBA) was not able to help the Toronto Raptors (39-28) in their last game. Despite Joseph's very good performance the Toronto Raptors (39-28) lost 99-105 on the road to the Atlanta Hawks. He scored 15 points, made 8 passes and 4 steals in 35 minutes. Joseph averaged so far 9.0ppg, 2.7rpg and 3.0apg in 65 games. He is also in the roster of the Canadian national team.

   #10. Power forward Olu Ashaolu (200-88, college: Oregon, currently plays in Japan) was not able to secure a victory for Sanen Neophoenix (25-18) in their last game on Sunday. Despite Ashaolu's very good performance the second-placed Sanen Neophoenix (25-18) was edged 73-71 in Saporro by the lower-ranked Levanga Hokkaido Sapporo (#4) in the Central group. He recorded a double-double by scoring 22 points and getting 15 rebounds. Ashaolu's overall stats this season are: 9.8ppg, 5.5rpg and 1.2apg. He is a former U18 international player as eleven years ago he still played for the Canadian national team.

   #11. Former U18 international point guard Evaldas Zabas (188-88, currently plays in Baltic League) helped his Lithuanian team P.Zvaigzdes win their game against the fifth-ranked Liepaja/Triobet 109-93 in the Baltic League last Wednesday. Zabas scored 18 points and added 5 passes in 29 minutes. Zabas averaged so far 14.4ppg, 3.5rpg and 3.5apg in eight games. Despite he played previously for the Lithuanian U20 national team, Zabas is currently in the Canadian U18 national team roster.

   #12. Former international guard Carl English (195-81, college: Hawaii, currently plays in Germany) helped ALBA Berlin win their game against the closely-ranked s Oliver Baskets crushing them 99-75 in the German BBL on Saturday night. He recorded 13 points and added 3 assists. English's overall stats this season are: 8.8ppg, 2.5rpg and 2.3apg. He used to play for the Canadian national team back in 2015.

   #13. Former international swingman Jevohn Shepherd (196-86, college: Michigan, currently plays in Belgium) couldn't help Spirou Charleroi (11-12) in their last game. Despite Shepherd's very good performance Spirou Charleroi lost 76-83 in Antwerp to the second-ranked Giants. He was the top scorer with 17 points. Shepherd also added 9 rebounds and dished 4 assists in 26 minutes. Shepherd averaged so far 11.5ppg, 4.1rpg and 1.9apg in 19 games. He used to play for the Canadian national team three years ago.

   #14. Former international point guard Kevin Pangos (188-93, college: Gonzaga, currently plays in Euroleague) helped his Lithuanian team Zalgiris win their game against the sixth-ranked Panathinaikos 64-58 in the Euroleague last Thursday. Pangos recorded 6 points and added 9 assists. Pangos' overall stats this season are: 8.4ppg, 1.8rpg and 3.3apg. He used to play for the Canadian national team back in 2009.

   #15. Former international power forward Kyle Landry (207-86, college: N.Arizona, currently plays in VTB United League) helped his Russian team Zenit win their game against the closely-ranked Unics Kazan crushing them 109-84 in the VTB United League on Sunday night. Landry scored 9 points and added 3 passes in only 11 minutes. Landry averaged so far 11.5ppg, 4.8rpg and 1.6apg in 19 games. He used to play for the Canadian national team four years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Canadian passport but never been selected to any of Canadian national teams:

   #1. Maurice Walker (208-F/C-91, college: Minnesota, currently plays in United Kingdom) led Worcester Wolves to a victory over one of league's weakest teams Leeds Force (7-18) crushing them 112-62 in the British BBL in Friday night's game. Walker was the top player that evening. He had a double-double by scoring 25 points and getting 12 rebounds. Walker also added 6 assists and 2 blocks in 31 minutes. Worcester Wolves (12-12) is placed sixth in the BBL. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. Walker has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 20.6ppg, 9.6rpg and 1.9apg in 15 games he played so far. Walker has a dual citizenship: Canadian and British.

   #2. Yannick Anzuluni (205-F-87, college: Houghton, currently plays in Sweden) could not help BC Lulea (22-7) in their last game. Despite his good performance the league leader BC Lulea lost 90-99 on the road to the lower-ranked (#6) Boras Basket. Anzuluni scored 13 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and dished 4 assists in 37 minutes. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Anzuluni averaged so far 14.7ppg, 7.4rpg, 2.7apg and 2.1spg in 28 games.

   #3. Experienced Michael Fraser (203-C-84, college: Oklah.Baptist, currently plays in Poland) was not able to help AZS Polfarmex in their game against PGE Turow (13-11) in the Polish PLK, despite his very good performance last Saturday. He had a double-double by scoring 17 points and getting 12 rebounds in 38 minutes. But AZS Polfarmex lost 98-109 in Zgorzelec to the much higher-ranked (#7) PGE Turow. It was AZS Polfarmex's fifth consecutive loss in a row. This year Fraser's overall stats are: 9.0ppg and 8.4rpg in 21 games.

   #4. Hernst Laroche (185-PG-89, agency: HMS, college: N.Mexico St., currently plays in France) contributed to an easy victory against one of league's weakest teams SO Maritime Boulogne (8-14) crushing them 81-56 in the French ProB (second division) on Saturday night. He had a double-double by scoring 10 points and making the same number of passes. Laroche also added 5 rebounds and 2 blocks in 32 minutes. Saint-Quentin Basket-Ball (9-13) is placed 16th in the ProB. It was his team's first victory after three consecutive loses. This year Laroche's overall stats are: 7.0ppg, 2.8rpg, 4.4apg and 1.2spg in 22 games.

   #5. Elijah Long (183-G, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to Mt.St.Mary's' victory against the St.Francis University (PA) (13-5) 71-61 in the NCAA in Tuesday night's game. He recorded 24 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in 37 minutes. The Mt.Saint Mary's University, MD has a very solid 14-4 conference record this season. It was Mt.St.Mary's' third consecutive victory in a row. Long's team will play only one more game in the NCAA Regular Season. And now that game is very crucial. Long has very impressive stats this year: 15.4ppg, 5.4rpg, 4.4apg and 1.6spg in 34 games.

   #6. Dylan Ennis (187-G-91, currently studies in the States) contributed to Oregon's victory against the University of California 73-65 in the NCAA last Friday. He recorded 16 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists (made all of his nine free throws !!!). Ennis averaged so far 11.0ppg, 4.3rpg, 3.1apg and 1.1spg. He is another player who holds two passports: Canadian and Jamaican.

   #7. Ali Kanaan (207-C/F-85, college: Mass.-Lowell, currently plays in Lebanon) was not able to secure a victory for Byblos in their game against Homenetmen in the Lebanese Pepsi LBL. Kanaan scored 6 points in 24 minutes. His team was badly defeated by 17 points 87-70. This year Kanaan's overall stats are: 5.6ppg, 5.1rpg and 1.3apg in 12 games. He has both Canadian and Lebanese nationalities.

   #8. Jermel Kennedy (201-F-89, college: Lander, currently plays in United Kingdom) is a teammate of previously mentioned Maurice Walker and both played together in the last British BBL game. Kennedy contributed to an easy victory against one of league's weakest teams Leeds Force crushing them 112-62. He recorded 15 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks. Kennedy averaged so far 13.6ppg, 6.9rpg, 2.8apg and 1.4spg. He also holds two passports: Canadian and British.

   #9. Dallin Bachynski (213-C-91, college: Utah, currently plays in Poland) couldn't help Energa Czarni in their game against Stelmet in the Polish PLK. Bachynski recorded 6 points in only 13 minutes. His team was edged 81-79. This year Bachynski's overall stats are: 5.0ppg and 3.0rpg in two games. He holds both Canadian and Polish passports.

   #10. Joseph Chartouny (190-G-94, is currently at the American university) couldn't help the Fordham in their game against the George Mason University in the NCAA, despite his very good performance in Thursday night's game. Chartouny scored 19 points and added 4 assists in 43 minutes. But his team lost 71-82. Chartouny averaged so far 12.1ppg, 4.1rpg, 5.0apg and 3.2spg in 29 games.

St. John's Edge (NBL Canada) signed experienced 36-year old Canadian ex-international guard Carl English (195-81, college: Hawaii). He played last season at ALBA Berlin in German BBL league. English managed to play in four leagues in two countries last year (!!!). In 24 BBL games he had 9.0ppg, 2.4rpg and 2.0apg. He helped them to make it to the German Bundesliga Cup Semifinals. Dinos stay perfect as the offence regains its footing - 2 days ago
The University of Calgary Dinos men's basketball team held off the Winnipeg Wesmen once again on Sunday evening, earning a 103-89 victory. With the win, Calgary moves to 6-0 on the season, while Winnipeg slips to 1-5. After struggling from the three-point line Saturday, the Dinos were able to regain their stroke, shooting 45.5% from deep. Five players had a least nine points for the Dinos, including Canada West leading scorer Mambi Diawara (195-G/F-94, college: Lamar St.CC)'s game-high 28.    [read more]
