TORONTO - The University of Torontos Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education today announced that John Campbell will assume the role of head coach of the Varsity Blues mens basketball program, effective May 13, 2013.
After a nation-wide search, it was clear to us that John is the right coach for the job, said Beth Ali, director of intercollegiate and high performance sport. His knowledge of the game and his coaching experience, not only across the CIS but on the international stage, will help us revitalize our program as we move into a new chapter of mens basketball at U of T.
Campbell joins the Blues after 11 seasons as the Dalhousie Tigers bench boss. During that time, he guided the Tigers to two AUS championship titles (2008-09, 2010-11) and earned Atlantic University Sport (AUS) coach of the year honours in 2010-11.
Internationally, Campbell helped Canada to a silver medal as the assistant coach at the FISU Games in Shenzhen, China. Most recently, he was an assistant with the British Basketball under-20 team that placed sixth at the 2012 European championships.
Prior to Dalhousie, Campbell was the head coach of the Laurentian Lady Vees womens basketball team, where he captured two Ontario University Athletics (OUA) titles, a Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) bronze medal and was named the OUA East coach of the year three times (1999, 2001, 2002). He also worked as an assistant coach with both the University of Victoria (1996) and Laurentian University (1994) mens basketball teams.
Im excited for the opportunity to come to U of T, said Campbell. The investment that the athletic department is making in mens basketball is very exciting. I believe with the combination of the new Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport and the support of the institution, theres a possibility of great success. Im very excited to meet the players and to continue the recruitment of top student-athletes.

Hillis recently completed his 19th season as the school's head coach and finishes his time at the U of R with 175 conference wins and 28 postseason victories. The team participated in three Canada West Final Fours during Hillis' tenure, with the program's best season coming in 2005-06 when the Cougars put together a 16-4 conference record.
It was a very difficult decision, but after much deliberation I decided that after serving as a head coach for over 20 years and 19 years at the University of Regina, it was time to step down, Hillis said. Over the past 19 years, I have enjoyed tremendously the opportunity to coach various cohorts of fine young men who have worn the Cougar basketball uniform. I have had the great pleasure over the years to meet wonderful people and make many friendships at the University, in the community, and around the country. I would like to thank the University of Regina for the experience and wish the men's basketball team and the entire athletic department future and continued success.

Ottawas newest professional basketball team, the Ottawa SkyHawks sign Kevin Keathley to a one year contract. SkyHawks owner, Gus Takkale announced today the hiring of Keathley as the clubs first Head Coach. Coach Keathley, 35, has spent over a decade coaching at the college and professional levels, setting pro basketball scoring records and winning two championships. Keathley comes with constant success over the course of his 10 year coaching career, never having posted a losing season.
Keathley will add great value to Ottawas expansion franchise by acquiring top level athletes and putting together a championship team. Over his career, he had discovered and developed great talent and placed over 40 players to the NBA, Euroleague and other international clubs. In 2011-2012, he was also selected by the NBA D-League to serve as a Coach in their Pre-Draft camps.
I'm honored to be named the Head Coach of the SkyHawks; Ottawa's first professional basketball franchise. I'm very thankful and humbled by the opportunity. The great City of Ottawa has a storied tradition in athletics, from the great Senators teams of the NHL over the last 100 years to the basketball programs at the University level. We will work just as hard to hold ourselves to the same standard of excellence on the basketball court that those teams have set over the years.
Coach K already has two pro basketball championship rings. He led the Louisville Eagles to the championships in 2003 and more recently, the ABA National Championship with the South East Texas Mavericks in 2010. He was named one of the top 10 Young Coaches in America by Pro Basketball News in 2006 and 2009.
Its his fast-paced offensive philosophy that makes his team fun to watch. It can only be compared to Loyola Marymount's Run-N-Gun style under Paul Westhead of the early 1990's. During his recent stint as Head Coach of the East Kentucky Miners of the CBA, his team set several pro basketball and CBA scoring records. One of his most notable records was setting the all-time single game scoring record for FIBA sanctioned teams in America -194 points in one game!
Gus Takkale says: I am excited to have Coach K alongside us as we prepare for Ottawas first championship run. As promised, we are going to show Ottawa a high-flying, up tempo, fast-paced basketball team; and Coach K has a track record of not only championships, but of also setting numerous records of high scoring at a pro level. His success speaks for itself. He has never had a losing season in his 10 year coaching career, he has built championship teams, and he is a published author on coaching. When he is not on the court, you will find him dedicating his time in the community and working with children. The Ottawa SkyHawks are honoured to have him.
Technical Director, Merrick Palmer, added "We interviewed several excellent and well-respected coaching candidates, and after careful consideration, agreed that Kevin would be best fit to lead this team at this time." Palmer goes on to say not only due to his high basketball IQ but also because he believes the community comes first. A character trait that is part of the SkyHawks mission and a great fit for the city of Ottawa.
