Syria U19 and Canada U19 lost the openers of the FIBA U19 World Championship and hoped to better their positions in Day 2. The North American representative had a fabulous game to take 99:53 victory. Canada started with 23:13 lead after the opening quarter , but failed a bit in the second period. Syria came out more determined in the second frame, matching Canada outscoring them 18-14 to close within six at the long break. Two other periods were massive for Canada that showed a good percentage from the filed as well. Canada produced 36-11 in the third period to answer all the questions in the game at that time. They added 26-11 in the last period and hoped to get three digits on the board, but were gladly satisfied with 99. Jordan Baker (193-G), Tristan Thompson and Laurent Bivard paced all the winners with 13 points each. Hani Adribe (198-F-90) ended up with 12, points in the losing effort, while AL JABE and Belal Gneed (196-F-90) had 9 apiece. Syria shot at just 37% from the filed, while Canada had 52.1%. Their final group game is against Australia tomorrow morning. Canada will face Spain in their last game of the group.

Canada and Italy opened Group C of the University Games that started in Belgrade, Serbia. The North American team showed a better game to seal the 89:80 win in the opener.

Canada and Italy opened Group C of the University Games that started in Belgrade, Serbia. The North American team showed a better game to seal the 89:80 win in the opener. Canada went on an early lead and grabbed 28:22 after the first frame. Chris O'Rourke 's team produced another 22-18 in the second period to take 50:40 advantage when the teams went to the lockers. The picture of the game did not change after the break as the North Americans remained in front in the court. They produced 25-20 for 15-point deficit closing thirty minutes of the game. Italy tried to recover in the game and bounced back with 20-14 in the last quarter, but it was to late to save the game. As a total it gave Canada 89:80 victory and the first success in Group C of the University Games. Jacob Doerksen (200-F-88) top-scored for the winners with 24 points. Josh Gibson-Bascombe (193-G-86) nailed 20 and Dax Dessureault (206-C) hit 10. Giancarlo Ferrero (194-G/F-88, agency: Players Group) finished the night with 26 points in the losing effort. Daniele Bonessio (197-G/F-88) posted 13, while Roberto Prandin (188-G-86) chipped in 11. Canada showed a better percentage from the filed as they made 26/58 shots. Italy meanwhile had 25/65 to have 38% from the field. Italy will face China today, while Canada will meet Asian team on Saturday.

Australia opened the U19 World Championship with victory. They defeated Canada in the preliminary Group C action. Cody Ellis (202-F-90) scored 25 points to lead the Emus to the win. Australia got to a quick start as they knocked down 24 points in the starting period worth a 6-point lead at the break. The Aussies opened a double-digit lead in the second frame but could not maintain the margin. Robert Gagliardi (185-G-90) and Mangisto Arop (197-G-90) pulled Canada within 8 at halftime. Cody Ellis and Jason Cadee gave the Emus a 15-point lead midway through the third stanza but Canada refused to give up. They cut the distance back to 10 points with ten minutes to go in regulation. Canada came within 9 after Kelly Kelly Olynyk (203-F) fired from downtown with under 3 minutes to go in the game. But Brock Motum (205-F-90) and Cody Ellis stepped up for the Emus at this point ensuring the initial win for Australia. Brock Motum finished with 22 points and 8 boards for the winners. Mangisto Arop replied with game-high 27 points and 11 boards for Canada. Robert Gagliardi, Kelly Olynyk and Cory Joseph (185-G-91) delivered 11 points apiece in the loss. Australia outrebounded their opponents 42:33 and sank 45% of field goals. The Emus also committed just 11 turnovers down the stretch. Australia play against Spain, while Canada take on Syria tomorrow.
