BOWLING GREEN 91, ILLINOIS 82: (Russellville, Ky.) - The final game of the 2017 Central Basketball Association regular season provided much intrigue, as the winner of today's matchup would advance to the postseason tournament next weekend. Bowling Green was looking to clinch their fourth playoff berth in their five-year history, while Illinois was looking to play in front of their home crowd as the playoff tournament was being played on the Coal Miners' home court in Danville, Illinois next week. Yet, despite the high stakes to the matchup, the game itself was not as dramatic, as Bowling Green obtained a grip on the lead early in the contest and did not let go. The hosts took a six-point advantage from the first quarter, led by eight points at the midway intermission, held on to a seven-point lead through three quarters, and carried a double-digit stranglehold throughout the final frame, en route to clinching the final playoff berth and third-seed with their 91-82 victory. Bowling Green was led by Monte Burney (6'1''-G, college: Martin Methodist) with 28 points, while Kashif Watson (6'4''-G-87, college: Idaho) led Illinois with 23 points. Bowling Green (5-3) will square off against Fort Wayne (5-3) in the semifinals, which will serve as a rematch of the 2015 CBA Championship game, where Bowling Green defeated Fort Wayne at the buzzer, 97-95, in Fort Wayne, Ind. Both teams have been to the championship game twice in their team history (Bowling Green: 2013, 2015; Fort Wayne: 2015, 2016) with both teams serving as the last two league champions: Bowling Green in 2015 and Fort Wayne in 2016. In the other semifinal matchup, Indianapolis (6-2) will face Mississippi (4-4) in a rematch of the season opener, where Indianapolis held on for a 90-87 victory. Indianapolis will be advancing to their second consecutive semifinals in as many years in the league, while Mississippi will be in the playoffs for the first time since 2015, as they finished with a 1-7 record last year. As for Illinois (4-4), they will join Baltimore (3-5) and Middle Tennessee (1-7) as the three teams who did not qualify for this year's postseason, and will look to rebound in 2018. 2017 CBA Postseason Tournament The playoffs this year will be held next weekend at Schlarman Academy at 2112 North Vermilion Street, in Danville, Illinois, which also serves as the home venue of the Illinois Coal Miners. The semifinals will be played on Saturday, May 13th, with Fort Wayne and Bowling Green playing each other at 5:00 p.m. Central Time, followed by Indianapolis and Mississippi squaring off at 7:00 p.m. Central Time. With a reduction of eight minutes per game, this also meant that the team and individual statistics would be lower than a typical game in the United States, but more reflective of the international environment. Since the league's transition four seasons ago, only one player had ever scored more than 40 points: Indianapolis' Anthony White (6'3''-G-92, college: Mercer), Jr., who scored 41 points against Bowling Green in the 2016 postseason tournament. This past Sunday afternoon, Bowling Green's Monte Burney (6'1''-G, college: Martin Methodist) tied that scoring record with 41 points of his own in an overtime victory against Baltimore. Burney, a 6-foot-2 guard from Clarksville, Tennessee, shot 14-for-24 from the field, including 7-for-13 from beyond the arc, and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. The Martin Methodist College graduate did more than account for over 36% of his team's points last weekend; he also grabbed 12 rebounds, had 5 assists, while being a force on the defensive side with 5 steals and 1 blocked shot. With his third double-double of the season, coupled with currently being the league leader in steals, second in the league in points scored, and fourth in the league in both assists and rebounds, it does not come as a surprise to many regarding Burney's clutch performance last Sunday and single-handedly keeping his team alive in the playoff hunt - earning him top honors for Week 4 of the 2018 CBA season. But the momentum began shifting in the home team's favor in the final quarter as Indianapolis jumped ahead and secured a 15-point lead at 85-70 with five minutes left in the game. Yet, the defending champions, led by former league MVP, Antonio Cannon (6'0''-PG-92, college: Indiana Tech), spurred a tremendous comeback for Fort Wayne, going on a 24-8 run and retaking the lead, 94-93, with 25 seconds left. Down by one point in front of a stunned home crowd, Indianapolis regained the advantage 14 seconds later, as Darryl Walker hit two free throws, to take a 95-94 lead. On the ensuing possession, Indianapolis double-teamed Cannon, forcing him to give up the ball to Kendan Lewis, who was unable to hit the game-winning shot, allowing Indianapolis to squeak out the victory and remain undefeated on the season. Indianapolis was led by Chrishawn Hopkins (6'2''-G-91, college: Wright St.) with 20 points, while Fort Wayne was led by Cannon with 33 points. Indianapolis (5-0), which will seek to earn their second consecutive regular season crown, will host Illinois next Saturday, while Fort Wayne (4-1) will look to even the season series with Indianapolis with a home matchup next Sunday afternoon. MEMPHIS 103, JACKSON 99: (Memphis, Tenn.) - In the third meeting of the season between the two teams, with the first two encounters occurring in Jackson, Memphis did not get off to a good start as they trailed by as many as 12 points early in the first quarter. Memphis took its first lead 33-31 early in the second quarter, only to let Jackson go on a 10-0 run to shift the deficit to eight points for Memphis. The deficit continued until late in the second half, where the two teams combined for eight ties and lead changes. With Memphis trailing 85-84 with less than five minutes remaining in the game, Memphis went on a 9-2 run to pull away for good and win their fourth game in the last five games. Memphis was led by Dontarion Wright (6'3''-G) with 33 points and Keith Barron with 27 points, while Jackson was led by LaJarvis Webster (6'6''-F-90) with 17 points and Ervin Herron (6'6''-PG, college: So.Poly State) II with 15 points. Memphis (4-2), which improved to 3-0 at home this season, will travel to Bowling Green next Sunday afternoon, while Jackson (1-4) will participate in a home-and-home series with Middle Tennessee next weekend. BOWLING GREEN 113, BALTIMORE 111 (OT): In a matchup between a team that has made the postseason four out of the last five years in Bowling Green, and a Baltimore squad that is winless this season and 0-7 overall in team history on the road, it turned out to be a surprising back-and-forth affair as each period of the game was decided by three points or less: Bowling Green led by three at the end of the first, led by two at halftime, and the game was tied at the end of the third and fourth quarters leading to an extra period to determine a winner. It appeared as if a second overtime would be needed, as the two teams were tied at 111-111, but Bowling Green was fouled with one second remaining. The hosts hit both free throws to win 113-111 and escape with a narrow victory and keep their postseason hopes alive. Bowling Green was led by Monte Burney (6'1''-G, college: Martin Methodist) with a league-high 45 points and Kalen Kimberland (6'0''-PG-90, college: Lindsey Wilson) with 15 points, while Baltimore was led by Antonio Wright (6'2''-G) with 35 points and Kendall Allison with 24 points. MEMPHIS 104, MIDDLE TENNESSEE 99: (Memphis, Tenn.) - In Nashville last night, Memphis led by double-digits throughout much of the game, until Middle Tennessee used a furious rally late in the game, outscoring by Memphis by 20 points in the final minutes, to escape with a victory. In Memphis this afternoon, it was the exact same story line, except inverted the other way. Middle Tennessee led by as many as 16 points in the first half, and carried a 16-point lead midway through the fourth quarter. But Memphis outscored Middle Tennessee 41-20 in the final 15 minutes, including a game-sealing 24-10 run to close out the game to exact revenge on the visitors and come out with a successful home rally of their own. Memphis (2-2) was led by Cohshun Odom (25 points), Jameel Best (24 points), and Dontarion Wright (6'3''-G) (22 points), while Middle Tennessee (2-1) was led by Myles Thrash (6'0''-PG-77, college: Stillman) (30 points), Marquis Patton (6'1''-G-85, college: Fisk) (25 points), and Dominique Rouse (20 points).
