East Coast expansion continues as the Washington Stars join the CBA for the 2017 season - Sep 24, 2016

Earlier this summer, the Central Basketball Association began its national expansion into the East Coast, via the introduction of the Baltimore Shuckers organization into the league for the 2017 season. The CBA has now introduced a second team from the region, as the Washington Stars, formerly known as the Metropolitan Allstars, will represent the nation's capital. The Washington Stars basketball organization, which was originally established in 2009, is currently led by general manager, Calvin Brown , Jr., who played professional basketball from 2007 to 2012. The 6-foot-9 power forward played collegiate basketball at NCAA Division-I, St. Bonaventure University, before being drafted in the NBA D-League in 2008 by the Utah Flash, and playing for the Washington Wizards summer league team in 2009. He finished his career playing overseas in four different continents in the following nations: Mexico, Sweden, Portugal, China, and Peru. Basketball talent runs in Brown's pedigree, as his father, Calvin Brown , Sr., was drafted in the 7th Round of the 1977 NBA Draft by the Washington Bullets, who went onto win their first and only league championship later that year. Washington will play their home games at the Stoddert Center in the Northwest sector of the District of Columbia, and will be led by head coach, Alvin Brown, who will be coaching his eighth season with the club and helped guide the organization to two championship titles in two different East Coast leagues in 2011 and 2014, respectively. The Stars organization has followed the CBA model in helping players advance to the international level, as during the nine years of the club's existence, they have helped nearly 40 athletes play overseas. Furthermore, the Stars have conducted several tours in South America, including their most recent tour to Peru in 2013. Washington, now paired with Baltimore on the East Coast, will look to establish a regional rivalry with their fellow first-year CBA team, while also looking to make its mark with other experienced teams in the league.
