Ex-Fury coach Keith Smart to take over Warriors - Sep 27, 2010

It turns out the road to the NBA does indeed run through Fort Wayne.

Last season Fort Wayne Mad Ants center Chris Hunter landed a job with the NBA's Golden State Warriors. This time around, the opportunity has presented itself to a former pro coach with Fort Wayne ties.

NBA sources have confirmed with multiple media outlets that former Fort Wayne Fury head coach Keith Smart will be named head coach of the Warriors.

The former Indiana University guard has served as an assistant to outgoing coach Don Nelson , and his seven seasons with Golden State makes him the longest-tenured assistant coach in the franchise's West Coast history.

I couldn't be happier for Keith, former Hoosier assistant coach Royce Waltman said of his former player.

Keith was a great young man who would always listen to everything that he was told. He really would make every attempt to soak stuff up that he was being taught.

Smart spent three successful seasons leading the CBA's Fury in the late 1990s. While with the team, Smart led Fort Wayne to consecutive winning seasons in 1997-98 and 1998-99, which was a first in franchise history.

The 31 victories the team achieved in the 1997-98 campaign was also a franchise record.

In 1998-99, Smart guided the franchise to the playoffs despite the club having a franchise-high nine players promoted to the NBA.

Keith was always a guy that has been receptive to the opportunities that present themselves to him, Waltman said.

He has been under (Nelson) and has always been a very good learner.

Smart gained fame when he sank the game-winning shot in the 1987 NCAA men's basketball championship game, giving Indiana its last NCAA title.

After his career in Bloomington, Smart played briefly in the NBA, followed by stints in the CBA and internationally. He was drafted in the second round of the 1988 NBA Draft by the Warriors, but his only NBA playing experience came with the San Antonio Spurs.

This will not be Smart's first time to lead an NBA team. After serving as an assistant coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers 2000-02, he was promoted to head coach of the club in the middle of the 2002-03 season and coached 40 games for the team.

In the first five seasons of the Central Basketball Association, coaches from the CBA member teams have advanced their careers in different ways after participating in the league. Some have become high school coaches or athletic directors, others have become college assistant coaches or head coaches, and even one became a NBA D-League assistant coach. However, on the verge of the sixth year of the CBA, a feat was accomplished today that is a first for the league: a CBA head coach was name...   [read more]

titlFORT WAYNE 95, INDIANAPOLIS 92: (Danville, Ill.) - In a battle between the two top teams in the league, featuring the top-seeded Indianapolis Blaze and the second-seed and defending league champions, Fort Wayne Flite, it was fitting that the contest literally went down to the final minute.
