CARLETON
UNIVERSITY WON THE CIS CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE 4TH TIME IN A ROW
The Carleton University Ravens
are Canadian Interuniversity Sport men's basketball champions for the fourth
consecutive season.
The third-seeded Ravens defeated the top-ranked University of Victoria Vikes
73-67 in the gold-medal game at the 2006 Final 10 on Sunday at the Metro
Centre in Halifax to become only the second team in history to capture four
straight W.P. McGee Trophies.
Victoria, playing in its first title game since claiming its eighth CIS
banner in 1997, set the record of seven straight from 1980-86.

Osvaldo Jeanty, who had received CIS player-of-the-year honours earlier this
week, completed a four-peat of his own when he was named most valuable
player of the championship final for the fourth consecutive year following a
27-point effort, the best output of his career at the nationals.
The fourth-year guard from Gloucester, Ont. also received the Jack Donohue
Trophy as tournament MVP, becoming the first player since Eric Hinrichsen of
Victoria in 1996-97 to claim season-MVP and championship-MVP honours in the
same campaign. Jeanty, who was also the tourney MVP in his rookie season in
2003, is one of two Ravens who have been part of the four Carleton
championship teams, along with fourth-year guard Pat Ross of Milford, Ont.
"I don't know how to explain it," said Jeanty, when asked why he always
seems to play well when all the marbles are on the line. "I guess part of it
is I take it as just another game, or maybe I play every game like it's the
championship final. My mentality is no matter the time of the year, it's the
same game, the same ball, the same net, it's basketball."
Head coach Dave Smart has now led his troops to 14 consecutive wins at the
nationals since a first-round, one-point loss to McMaster (78-77) in 2001.
Victoria set the all-time mark of 18 straight victories at the CIS tourney
from 1980-88.
"I'm not sure any of them (championships) feels better, they all feel
different I think," commented Smart, whose team has been without injured
second-team all-Canadian forward Aaron Doornekamp since the second round of
the OUA playoffs. "Coaches often wonder at night why their team didn't play
as well as they should have. I keep wondering why this team always plays
this well in big games."
"These kids proved once again they are the best team in the country,"
continued Smart, who rounded out his seventh season at the helm. "They
deserve a lot of credit, they beat a heck of a team tonight. Victoria is an
outstanding opponent, and in my opinion (Chris) Trumpy may be the best
player in the country next to Oz (Jeanty)."
Victoria head coach Craig Beaucamp had words of praise for the four-time
champions.
"We did a better job at guarding Osvaldo (Jeanty) in the second half, I
think we even shut him down for over 10 minutes," said Beaucamp, whose team
pulled to within one point late in the game after being down by as much as
17 in the first half. "But their other guys stepped up, (Ryan) Bell,
(Jean-Emmanuel) Jean-Marie. They are an outstanding team, what more can you
say."
Jeanty played all 40 minutes against UVic, and did not leave the court in
three outings over the weekend. He was good on nine of 15 field-goal
attempts, including 4-for-7 from beyond the arch, and added eight rebounds.
The 6-foot guard averaged 23.8 points per contest in the tournament, having
tallied 22 against both UQAM in the quarter-finals, and Cape Breton in the
semis.
Three of his teammates scored in double digits against the Vikes to lead the
Ravens to CIS gold. Third-year guard Ryan Bell of Orleans, Ont. had 15
points, junior guard Jean-Emmanuel Jean-Marie of Ottawa had 12, while
sophomore guard Stuart Turnbull of Kingston, Ont. added 10. Jean-Marie
grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Bell was named to the all-tournament team along with Victoria teammates
Brandon Ellis of Campbell River, B.C. and Jacob Doerksen of Abbotsford,
B.C., Cape Breton's Ryan Keliher of Charlottetown, and StFX's Alexander
Stephen of Toronto.
Doerksen, a 6-foot-7 forward who was named CIS rookie of the year this
season, paced UVic in the gold-medal game with 22 points and six rebounds.
Ellis, a fourth-year guard, added 15 points, nine of them on three-point
shooting, while fifth-year guard Chris Trumpy of Victoria contributed 11
points and six assists in his final game as a Vike.
The Ravens came out firing and didn't slow down the entire first half,
shooting an astonishing 64.0 percent (16-for-25) from the floor in the
opening 20 minutes, including 5-for-10 from beyond the arch.
Carleton jumped to a quick 15-6 lead with Jeanty accounting for 11 of these
points, and held a 22-10 advantage midway through the first period. Jeanty
made it 29-13 sinking his second three-pointer of the night, and the Ravens
would lead by as much as 17, at 37-20, en route to retreating to the locker
room ahead 41-30.
Jeanty was simply sensational in the opening stanza, scoring 18 points on
7-for-10 shooting, including 2-for-4 from three-point range. Bell was also a
major factor early sinking all of his four field-goal attempts, including
two from downtown, to finish with 10 points at the break.
Doerksen paced the Vikes in the first frame with 14 points.
After the Ravens made it 44-30 scoring the first basket of the second half,
Victoria caught fire and went on a 22-7 run to pull within one point, at
52-51, with just over nine minutes remaining when Trumpy sank a long
three-pointer.
Jeanty came up big again with 4:30 left on the clock and Carleton holding on
to a 59-55 advantage, hitting his third three-pointer of the night, his
first points of the second period, to give the champs a seven-point cushion.
The Vikes refused to go away and found themselves within three, at 70-67,
when Doerksen hit from up close with the clock reading 17 seconds.
Jeanty was fouled on the ensuing in-bound and sent to line for a
one-and-one. He uncharacteristically missed the free throw but grabbed his
own rebound, and was fouled again. Had the Vikes recovered the ball, they
would have had 7.1 seconds to send the match to overtime with a three-point
shot.
The season and tournament MVP rounded out the scoring with three free throws
in the final seconds.
Carleton shot 54.2 percent for the game, including 46.7 percent from
three-point range (7-for-15), compared to 45.7 percent for Victoria, which
was good on seven of 18 long-distance attempts (38.9%). The Ravens had a
29-26 edge in rebounds.
