Just after the end of 2011-12 season, ACPBL Commisioner Brian Graham has sent the following statement to Usbasket.com:
'Greetings from New York City. The ACPBL has completed its 2011-2012 season with the Beltway Bombers capturing the title over the top seeded Palmieri Jeans. In what was an up and down season of minor league basketball The ACPBL was able to survive and complete the season. The league saw a neck and neck finish in MVP voting between Fahreed Cheatham (6'5''-F-79, college: Lincoln, PA), Hugh Jones (6'5''-G/F-80) and Antoinne Morgano (6'5''-G/F-86) . Morgano ended up capturing the MVP award with averages of 31.0 ppg and 14rpg per game. The league saw an influx of highly talented players including several D-league players Jamael Lynch (6'1''-G-85, college: Mass.-Lowell), Adrian Bowie (6'2''-G-89, college: Maryland), and Brian Kortovich (6'2''-G-81, college: Cuyahoga). The league also saw the birth of an up and coming star named Cavell Johnson (6'8''-F-85, college: UMBC). Johnson would go on and win the championship and capture the Finals MVP. Moving forward into the upcoming season, the ACPBL will be in the process of solidifying its role within the minor league basketball community. The league will be exploring the following options for continued success. We will be developing a more developmental league approach including a possible name change. We will look to establish a 6 week summer league for players to gain added exposure, a downsizing of rosters from the standard 13 man to 10 man playing roster, this will give players an extra tool of exposure and playing in their quest to further their careers in basketball. The development of a league referee assigner to create an unbiased approach to officiating. We are also looking to bring in more teams to create a balance within the geographical settings of the league. All other ideas will be discussed at a mid summer meeting with returning teams and newly added teams. Once again the league would like to thank everyone within the basketball community for their continued support.!'

With about 6 minutes left in the ACPBL championship game, with the Bombers up 10 points, Beltway Bombers CEO and Head Coach Chaz Dudley was heard telling his players that '2nd place sucks...you don't want that feeling. What are you prepared to do to win this chip?! Every possession now down the stretch is critical...we're playing as much the clock as we are them. Let's be brilliant on the basics, execute our sets, gang rebound, and finish.' The Beltway Bombers listened and closed out Palmieri Jeans Destroyers (Destroyers), 127-118, to win the 2011-2012 ACPBL Championship. The 'Bad Boys' Bombers trademark relentless pressure blitzing defense, multiple scoring options, and unselfish execution, enabled them to pull away in the 4th quarter.
Bombers had six of their nine players who scored in double figures, led by Cavell Johnson (6'8''-F-85, college: UMBC). The 6-8 F had 26 points, 15 rebounds, 6 blocks; and 3 steals, earning him championship game MVP honors. PG Joseph Flegler (6'0''-G-85, college: Savannah St.) added 29 points with 7 assists and 7 rebounds; 6-7 F Antonio Haymon (6'7''-F-88, college: Lee) dropped 25 points; 6-3 G Steven Miles (6'3''-G-81, college: American) added 11 points; and 6-5 SGBaby Shaq Hugh Jones (6'5''-G/F-80) had 10 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals. 6-4 SG Rogers Barnes (6'4''-G/F-86, college: Morgan St.) 6-3 G Myron Howe (6'1''-G-74) and 6-7 F Stacey Daniels (6'7''-F) were all very aggressive and productive on both ends as well. Bombers played with only nine players (missing PG Evan Martin (6'0''-PG-83, college: Wesley) and PF David Bailey (6'9''-F-83, college: Prince George CC)).
The championship game was what we expected, with two talented teams going at it...physical, competitive and hard-fought. With the Bombers trailing by as much as 15 points in the 2nd quarter, Coach Chaz had one of the most important time-outs all season. His message was clear and firm...'it's a marathon, not a sprint. Every team makes runs; this is theirs. Stay poised, extend our defense to force them to shoot contested jumpers, rebound and then attack the rim. Let's chip away and get their lead to single digits by the half'. Within a six minute window, the Bombers did much better than that, and had the game tied at the half, gaining all the momentum. With an evenly played 3rd quarter, the 4th quarter however belonged to the Bombers. Every timely steal, rebound, block shot, foul shot, bucket, and defensive stop was done by assorted Bombers players, to eventually secure the win.
Bombers PG Joseph Flegler said 'it was satisfying to sacrifice for one goal and then achieve it'. F Jamaal Wise knows that his team's strong chemistry had a lot to do with it's success 'the fact that we all are very cool with each other, and it carries over with us being unselfish on the court.'
The #2 seeded Bombers impressive playoff run began on April 29th when they defeated the Toms River Shooters by 31 points...117-86, led by Baby Shaq's triple-double of 27 points, 14 rebs and 10 assists. The Bombers then traveled to Hartford, Connecticut on May 4th (venue of ACPBL Final Four-Chip) to face the #3 seeded Hartford Lightning on Saturday evening. In a back & forth battle until the 4th quarter, the Bombers behind Hugh Jones, Joseph Flegler, Jamaal Wise, and Cavell Johnson, pushed their lead up to 10 points, and never let the Lightning come close again, winning, 130-122. 'The Lightning are a talented team. We wanted to get them in a catch-up mode in the 4th quarter, which would result in quick shots by them. Once we contested, boxed out, and rebounded, it would force them to foul us. We then had to make free throws down the stretch, which we did for the most part'.
With Palmieri Jeans Destroyers (Destroyers) defeating the Hudson Valley Kingz in the earlier semi-final, 134-122, it set the stage for the top two seeds to match-up in the chip. The Bombers had defeated Palmieri Jeans Destroyers three weeks back in the regular season by 15 points; 113-98 behind a dominant performance by Hugh Jones's triple-double. 'We knew that if we matched up with them in the championship game, that it was going to be a major battle'. Coach Chaz added, 'they have one of the best coaches in the league, and four proven 20 point scorers (Fahreed, Sherm, Anis and Keyes). You can't focus on one guy because they can attack you with assorted players'.
Coach Chaz and his Bombers players executed their defensive game plan neutralizing both Anis Taylor (9 points) and Sherman Brittingham (6'5''-F-83, college: California, PA) (13 points). Fahreed Cheatham (6'5''-F-79, college: Lincoln, PA) finished with 27 points and Mike Keyes added 20 points. Bombers then exploited designated match-ups offensively en-route to a well deserved championship victory. 'We have a great group of guys with the right attitude and determination' says F Antonio Haymon. Bombers co-captain Rogers Barnes added, 'winning the chip is great considering the road we took and the adversity we overcame...very rewarding'. Co-captain Steven Miles was happy to be a part of the team again after tearing his achilles heel in the summer; 'it was amazing to win the chip because I didn't think I would be able to come back in time to play. It's great to be a piece of the puzzle.'
Myron Howe stated that 'it's an honor and a pleasure to be a part of a championship team that is being coached and run by a classy leader.' Co-captian Baby Shaq simply put 'playing for the Bombers was the best move I made in years.'
Congratulations to Bombers CEO and Head Coach Chaz Dudley in winning his 45th team championship over 18 years. Bad Boy Bombers are Beasts of the ACPBL !
