Perhaps the most stunning facet of the Panama City Breeze 104-89 loss to the Davie Stars on Saturday night was that the Breeze took brief control of the game before halftime with their defense.
That they surrendered 68 second-half points was one of a number of puzzling aspects, some which disrupted the flow of the American Basketball League game at Rutherford High School.
What was a constant, however, is when the Stars decided to penetrate and pound the offensive glass the Breeze didnt have an antidote while falling to 1-2 with their second straight loss.
The Stars, 1-2, won their first game despite bringing only eight players and basically using a six-player rotation when taking control after halftime.
Kiwan Smith (6'7''-F-87, college: Redlands CC) had 30 points and unofficially snared 20 rebounds while keying the second-half surge. The Breeze led 45-36 at halftime after scoring the last nine points of the second quarter in the final 90 seconds.
The Stars extended their zone defense to choke off the perimeter and deny Panama Citys many 3-point threats beyond the arc. The Breeze turned solid team defense into points as Clifford Clinkscales (6'1''-G-84, college: De Paul) had three assists shortly before intermission.
Having scored 36 points in the opening 20 minutes, the Stars produced 35 in the third quarter alone. Robert Mitchell (6'6''-F-86) supported Smith with 22 points and Brent Jennings (6'4''-G-88, college: So.Poly State) had 20. Keon Lawrence (6'2''-G-87, college: Seton Hall) added 16.
