(official Press Release from team Owner) The American Basketball Association is back and bigger than ever! Established in 1967, the ABA produced legendary players such as Julius 'Dr. J' Erving, Artis Gilmore, Rick Barry, Moses Malone, 'The Iceman' George Gervin, and many more. There were also a few NBA teams that were birthed out of the ABA; Indiana Pacers, San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, and the Brooklyn Nets. In 1976 the ABA merged with the NBA, leaving little room for semi- pro basketball in the United States.
In 1999 Richard Tinkham (founder of the Indiana Pacers) and Joe Newman reformed the partnership with the NBA, bringing back the historic ABA.
The ABA is the largest most diversified professional sports league in the world, with over 120 + teams in the United States and abroad. In March of 2017, the ABA named Kimberly Meadows Clark their 13th female owner, but this was not the only big news; Kimberly became the first female professional sports team owner in the State of Alabama!
The Magic City Surge is in the Gulf Coast Division, faced to play many well established teams, Kimberly stated, 'It has definitely been a challenge trying to get support from the community, to get everyone to see the big picture, but I have so much faith in what this will become for our community, and for our youth'. The Surge have completed their try-outs and acquired Coaches. Their Coaches are well-known through the Southeast from the NFL to the NBA (this should be interesting).
The Surge is gearing up for their first season in the ABA recruiting talent from all over the state of Alabama. Their schedule is full of great competition, but their mission goes beyond the court, to improve their community through providing family fun activities, Positive youth interaction, promoting education, sports, and arts; and also by building lasting business and community relationships. The Surge opens doors of endless opportunities for young men who seek to go to the next level in basketball, as well as, opens doors for those who wish to work in the professional sports arena.
Be on the lookout for more exciting news from the Surge! Media Day coming soon!! For interviews or more information please contact:
