Joe Newman
Usbasket is very proud to interview Joe Newman , who runs the American Basketball Association starting from various years behind. we are very grateful to Joe for his availability and here is our interview to him:

Q: What was you doing before to enter in sports business ?
A: For 20 years, I was in the ad agency business followed by 10 years in the broadcasting business.

Q: How many years exactly did you run the ABA and what about the main changes/developments in the league over this period ?
A: I ran the ABA for its first 15 years starting in 2000 and it has grown to become the largest professional sports league in the US. When we begin play in the fall, we'll have nearly 90 teams - and we are the most diversified professional sports league ever with 75% of our teams owned by African-Americans, Asians, Hispanics and women. And we've proven that you can provide high quality professional basketball and entertainment at affordable prices. Finally, we give over 1000 players, 200 coaches and 200 officials an opportunity to compete at the professional level and provide a stepping stone to the NBDL, NBA and international teams.

Q: the last season has seen something like a "two hands drive" with you and Ron Tilley, so please, explain to the reasons of this move and how it worked.
A: Ron Tilley became CEO last July. While still CEO, I have taken over the management of the league as it was not going in the direction the shareholders felt it should be going.

Q: will you go on together with Tilley, or the recent named Vice Presidents will be aside you in the management more than Tilley ?
A: The newly named VPs plus a recently appointed Executive Committee will work together to maximize the potential of the ABA.

Q: has every season reported all the news regarding the ABA and all its teams, but to be sincere, it was a very hard job. Too many teams to follow, too poor media informations, starting from official boxscores and team rosters or transactions. What do you plan to do to improve this important part of the league organization ?
A: The ABA league office, working with the Executive Committee has developed new Standards and Requirements for all ABA teams and will present them at the league meeting on July 11 in Indianapolis. The ABA recognizes the very things you've mentioned relation to information, box scores, rosters, transactions - and we have established improving in these things as a major priority. You will see changes beginning this season.

Q: given the enormous increase of the teams playing in your league, can you please say to us how much is the fee to enter the league ?
A: Depending upon the market and the time of year, market reservation fees can run as low as $2500 and as high as $10,000 both of which the ABA finances with a small deposit and low monthly payments, which is why we say that it is easier to own and operate an ABA team than any other - and why we have grown as no other league in history.

Q: How much every team owner has to pay the ABA for referees, media services, organization and so on ?
A: The ABA is the only professional sports league with no dues, no assessments; teams keep 100% of their revenues. However, each team pays for its referees. The teams do not pay for media services, ABA website, organization. That's why so many teams want to come to the ABA. And we provide the best business model in professional sports as well as more help for our teams in business operations than any other league in the US.

Q: Will be the fee increased in 2015-16 season ?
A: No, the fee will not be increased and in fact, we have lowered the monthly payments to make easier on our teams.

Q: again about the dramatic increasing of the ABA teams in last seasons, why don't you consider to build something like an "elite division" made of the better 12 or 16 teams that play a 'main schedule' between them and a 'secundary schedule' with divisional teams in their region as it is now ?
A: I have a problem with teams being called an "elite division" because I want all ABA teams to feel equal. However, the Executive Committee is working on a plan that will solve some of the problems created with our rapid fire growth and the differences between teams. It will be announced at the July 11 league meeting.,

Q: You could call this "ABA Elite" and leave as "ABA Developmental" the remaining almost 60 teams that usually play not more than 12 games in the season. Am I too daring or inventive to purpose this one ?
A: I think you will like the "new look" ABA and as soon as it is announced, you will be among the first to know..but this is an important question - and we recognize that it was something that had to be addressed. We've done that, you will be very impressed with the solution.
