As you can see, some of the Women's American Basketball Association teams have yet started operations for the 2013 season.
Just at the end of 2012, we had received this release from the ABA:
The American Basketball Association (ABA) announced that it will re-launch the WABA with play anticipated to begin in May, 2013. "There's no doubt that the interest in another women's professional basketball league is there," stated Joe Newman , ABA CEO. "But it has been difficult organizing the league. Fortunately, we've put together a group of people with the backgrounds and skills to make the WABA something really special and to provide opportunities to those who want to own, coach and play in a top-notch professional women's league."
Sonya Nichols will serve as WABA CEO. Ms Nichols boasts a sports resume that includes an assortment of both on and off court experiences including a tenure at James Madison University as a scholarship member of the NCAA tournament team. While in ISHA, she held the records for most rebounds in a game, season and career (two of the three are current); the number six rebounder in the nation's history behind greats like Lisa Leslie and Sheryl Miller and has helped organize and managed Michael Jordan's Basketball Camp, University of Illinois, Wisconsin and Notre Dame camps. She i9s currently in the telecommunications industry.
Al Smith , currently co-owner of the ABA Orange County Novastars, will serve as WABA COO. Smith has been a fixture in Southern California basketball for many years organizing local teams for area recreational leagues and establishing a winning environment with local talent. With a background in mortgage finance and sales management, "I am confident that Sonya, Loretta and I can put together a very strong league," stated Smith. "We will make the WABA brand a stable one and bring value to all who join with us."
Loretta Abrams will serve as WABA EVP. A graduate of Southern University of Louisiana, she has always had a passion for basketball and has taken additional certification courses in Athlete Management, Player Associations Legalities, Sports Management and Sports Contract Negotiations. She is a licensed sports agent and professional scout and has worked with the NBA Houston Rockets and WNBA Houston Comets as well as the WNBA New York Liberty.
If you are interested in owning a WABA team, or if you are interested in coaching or playing in the WABA,
please contact Sonya Nichols at 312 459 2791 or email sonyanichols@yahoo.com or call Al Smith at 949 297 6682 or email al@novastarbasketball.com . or visit www.abalive.com . The WABA website will be announced shortly.
